The following guidelines are the lastest I use in most workshops. I have expermented with as many as 15, but less it better. I have used only 4 (those with *) and think the outcome is just about as good as with more. The second set of twelve was the official FCE guidelines for many years.

GUIDELINES FOR BUILDING COMMUNITY

1. Wear name tags

2. Be on time for each session

3. Say your name before you speak*

4. Use " I" statements when you speak*

5. Express any dislikes in the group

6. Speak when moved to speak*

7. Be inclusive. Avoid exclusivity

8. Respect confidentiality*

* You can use only 4 and get good results.

OFFICIAL FCE GUIDELINES FOR MANY YEARS

1. Wear name tags

2. Be on time for each session

7. Commit to "hang in there"

8. Speak when moved to speak

9. Be responsible for your success

10. Participation can be verbal or non-verbal

11. Be emotionaly present with the group

12. Respect confidentiality
